Jon Turner Board member report – November 2025 – May 2026

The term has started off with a lot of change – far from the least being the constant change to Plan Change 120 and what this may or may not mean for our area. We are slowly beginning to get an understanding of what the most recent changes will mean for intensification in our area and potential downzoning in flood areas, with more info to come and another submission period to be opened.

I am one of the six council appointees to the Tūpuna Maunga Authority for this term, and we started our first meetings in March this year. So far we have approved the operational plan that was developed last year, had a variety of reports on leases and community buildings and the Authority has begun this years ‘Love your Maunga’ series of events. We planted over 2000 plants at Te Tātua-a-Riukiuta at the end of May, with over 100 volunteers which meant the work was completed very quickly! The mahi on Te Tātua has been epic to see with extensive native plantings already in and new track works. Great news to see the wharepaku/toilet is also being replaced.

This term the board chose not to appoint me to the Manukau Harbour Forum but I have kept an active interest in the Harbour and am really excited to see the “Better Environmental Outcomes for the Manukau Harbour” project nearly at adoption stage by the Governing Body. This work has been going on for multiple years, and will see the council body agree to environmental outcomes across the harbour, with the next step an ‘implementation plan’ for how to reach those. A really good piece of work! The forum also approved the Harbour being added as an official East Asian-Australasian Flyway site, which acknowledges the Harbour’s important role in the transit of bird species across very long distances.

It was fantastic to get back into Belfast Reserve after the works were completed to reopen this reserve. This has been closed since late 2019 and had seemed too difficult to re-open following a series of flood events. A great bit of work was done with a track designer and funding came from the Regional funds to make this happen, and now the community is back able to access their park. A shout out to the Friends of Belfast Reserve group, which is funded by our eco-neighbourhoods program.

The long-awaited pedestrian crossing on Dominion Road outside La Voie Francaise is due to start works in mid-June. This is a high-pedestrian area with no safe crossing nearby, and will be well-used and hopefully help to avoid serious pedestrian injuries, as happened in 2024. Hopefully the delay to the works doesn’t mean the winter rains drag the project out! We also are about to see the traffic lights turned on at the Duke Street/Landscape/Mt Eden Road intersection – one of the top 10 highest risk intersections in Auckland. A great piece of advocacy over a long time for our board, and particularly former member Bobby Shen who worked hard to make this happen.
